Love Me Harder, a metaphor that means the bottomless pit of life
Ariana Grande's "Love Me Harder"
I've listened to Ariana's "Love Me Harder" over 10 times today, and I am continuing to listen to it. The song starts with her singing, "Tell me something I need to know."
Here is my opinion of this song:
First of all, Ariana is gorgeous beyond belief. She is the meaning of life for a man, and a perfect symbol of desire. In other words, she is what a man wants. She is the purpose behind a man's aspirations. The chorus of the song, where she repeatedly says love me love me love me, harder harder harder harder, could be simplified as a woman merely wanting sex. On the other hand, it could be woman challenging a man to devote his entire self to love. Keeping this dynamic in mind, one could interpret this song as expressing the above mentioned concept even without this interaction between the sexes. Because it is music, anyone can sing this song. This song could be about a man who wants a woman to "love him harder."
Now, let's face it. "Love me harder?" That's a bit sexual. But why think of it sexually? That is the beautiful interplay of this song. On the surface it seems incredibly sexual, but a deeper interpretation of the words unpacks great meaning.
After the first line of musical brilliance, Ariana goes on to sing,
"Then take my breath and never let it go
If you just let me invade your space
I'll take the pleasure, take it with the pain"
Wait a minute. Now Ariana is desiring some unknown man? Not only that, she desires a man and she desires both sides of the equation of having a man: pleasure and pain. She sings to this mysterious man to take her breath away and never let it go. Breath is the essence of life, Ariana! Breath is what keeps you alive. If this man were to take it away, well, you would probably die. This symbolizes Ariana's commitment to her man. It symbolizes her lack of desire for anything else. She goes on pleading for the man to let her invade his space. So now you are the initiater of the relationship? You are the spark that sets the fire, yet it still the man's job to "Love You Harder"?
But the chorus hasn't been sung... Another glory of the song.
On the last line of the verse she mentions that she will take the pleasure and take it with the pain. The second line she asked the man to take her breath and never let it go and now she is bringing up taking herself. So she is actually singing about a healthy relationship, one in which both sides of the party are taking.
"And if in the moment I bite my lip
Baby, in that moment you'll know this is
Something bigger than us and beyond bliss
Give me a reason to believe it"
What does that verse mean except pure transcendence through love? No further words are needed. Except, I must mention... When she mentioned the moment she bites her lip. Thing are getting sexual!
'Cause if you want to keep me, you gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, got to love me harder
And if you really need me, you gotta, gotta, gotta, gotta, got to love me harder
Baby, love me harder
Love me, love me, love me
Harder, harder, harder'
The chorus... The chorus... The wonderful chorus. What is she talking about? Well, first of all, she is using the classically powerful rhetorical technique, repetition. This technique, repetition, if about something plain and simple, like "Push the red button, push the red button, push the red button," becomes monotonous and boring. But if someone is repeating something deep, mysterious, transcendental, or even romantic, the audience gets a warm and fuzzy feeling that brings them back to their personal moments of deepness, mystery, transcendence, and romance.
Then, all of a sudden, after all of this grand Ariana Grande, The Weeknd comes in with his partially feminine male singing voice. He sings,
"I know your motives and you know mine
The ones that love me, I tend to leave behind
If you know about me and choose to stay
Then take this pleasure and take it with the pain
And if in the moment you bite your lip
When I get you moaning you know it's real
Can you feel the pressure between your hips?
I'll make it feel like the first time"
Honestly, I have no idea what The Weeknd is trying to say here, except the second verse is indicative of pure sexual desire.
The chorus comes in again, and then BOOM:
"So what do I do if I can't figure it out?
You got to try, try, try again, yeah.
So what do I do if I can't figure it out?
I'm gonna leave, leave, leave again"
So now Ariana is giving this mysterious man two chances. After failing the first time and being unable to figure it out, Ariana asks him to try again. After this second time, she says she's going to leave, and she says it three times.
This song's playful choice of words and its seemingly confident knowledge of love along with its use of repetition of words that indicate deep emotions and feelings makes it an everlasting musical gem.
